We’ve all heard the warnings about DVT (deep vein thrombosis) when traveling on long-haul flights. Tight conditions for hours with very little leg movement – yes, I saw the in-flight videos demonstrating the exercises. Well if these warnings apply to you, think of the astronauts!
They don’t travel for hours in cramped conditions – they travel for weeks. Now I know these people are considered superheroes, but in the cold light of day they are only human and subject to the same weaknesses as you and me, but of course they have technology on their side. .
The elastic material Visco, now commonly referred to as memory foam, was originally developed by NASA to improve seating and absorb g-forces in the movement of spacecraft. Okay, maybe some time before your favorite airline offered tourist class memory foam seats, but you can still reap the benefits today.
Memory foam is designed to mold itself around any pressure applied – it reacts to pressure and subsequent heat to absorb the pressure by distributing it over its surface. Now apply this thought to your mattress. Your body is not flat, therefore when you sleep some areas of the body are more supported than others. We all woke up one morning with aches and pains and just booked it for a bad night’s sleep – which of course is probably right. But why? Picture yourself lying on your back – most of the direct contact will be your head, shoulders, rump, and heels. Leave your neck, lower back and to some extent your legs unsupported. It’s not better on the front, gravity forces the lower back to arch even more and you can easily wake up with a stiff neck and sore lower back.
Memory foam has the ability to mold itself around your bumps and curves, ensuring consistent, even support all over your body. Hey and you don’t have to worry about sleeping in the same position all the time – memory foam returns to its original shape when the pressure is released – so if you move, it moves with you, creating a unique combination of body contour support and comfort. A memory foam mattress literally guarantees restful sleep.
Of course, restful sleep is not the only benefit – you will soon feel the benefit of reduced pressure on the spine and joints, not to mention aiding good circulation – remember that it does. That’s where we came in – PST.
An added benefit to a memory foam mattress is that it is naturally hypoallergenic. Its surface structure offers little comfort to your other usual sleeping partners – dust mites.
As my Irish friend says “and there’s more” – these smart memory foam guys didn’t stop at mattresses, heck no! These days, you can buy all kinds of things incorporating memory foam. Sleep masks that twist to the shape of your face so you don’t have to endure a tight elastic tourniquet around the back of your head just to block the light. Memory foam slippers – whoa! luxury – like floating in the air. I think even the sneaker giants are looking for memory foam for your next pair of must-have sneakers. Memory foam furniture – cushions, chairs and sofas. Even Fido gets a peek with his own luxury memory foam sleeping mat. Of course, the bed hasn’t been forgotten in all the excitement, aside from the memory foam mattress, you can get memory foam pillows, mattress toppers, and lots of other pieces.
Okay, but you only started reading this because you are going on a long haul flight – well don’t forget your memory foam travel pillow – it’s going to be a long flight and you could too. well be comfortable.
