Today I’m just going to talk a little bit about gang basics and their signs and symbols. Gangs are everywhere in our country and are a growing problem. Almost all police services have a unit dedicated to this cause.
So what is a gang? It is an organized group of three or more people with common names, signs, colors, symbols and who engage in violent and / or illegal behavior. Many of these members have a troubled family life. They have often been mistreated and have not learned the value of human life. These individuals find acceptance and support in the gangs to which they join.
Here are some warning signs that you know someone who might be part of a gang …
– change hair / dress new friends with same hair / dress
– secret behavior about friends / activities new interest in graffiti symbols
– no explanation for routine changes change in places frequented
– drug use suspected by mood swings new discipline problems
– increase in goods such as money, hats and clothes
– phone threats to the family new fear of the police new sense of bravery
However, you can do prevention work to prevent it from going so far with your child. Here are a few tips …
– Insist on meeting their friends and relatives
– Know where they are going, with whom, where and when they will return
– Establish rules and enforce them
– Encourage legitimate interests outside of school
So what are some of these gangs? We will start with the nation of the almighty Latin king. They appeared in Chicago in the 1940s to support each other against racism and other social issues of the time. It’s still the biggest gang in Chicago. The original members were Puerto Rican, but now it has evolved into all races to join, but are mostly Spanish, Latvian, Italian, Portuguese, Mexican and South American.
What separates this group is that they preach Latin pride and some chapters have made a religion called Kingdism. They have meetings to recite their gang pledge and pray to answer Inca’s call. They also use these meetings to discuss gang reprisals, drugs, or gang rule violations. This gang is more structured and organized than most of the other gangs. They also celebrate January 6th as “Kings Holy Day” and the first week of March as “Kings Week”. In their gang symbol, the five dots on the crown represent love, respect, sacrifice, honor, and obedience. This group identifies with the colors yellow or gold. The Chicago Police Department estimates about 25,000 members in Chicago alone.
This gang is based primarily in Los Angeles. They are among the best-known gangs due to their extensive media exposure in the 1980s. This gang is no longer racially specific. They generally align with the popular nation. They are a rival to the Crips and often refuse to use the letter C in their writing. This gang started in 1971 and wears their colors (red) on the right side, like red laces, a red belt or a red bandana in their right back pocket.
This gang was born in Los Angeles in 1969. The crips are established in 199 areas of Los Angeles. This gang aligns with the Folk Nation. This gang has also spread across the United States and is multiracial and extremely violent. They associate with the color blue and refuse to use the letter B in their writing. They also call themselves “cuzz” and call themselves “blood murders”. They also wear British Knight (BK) tennis shoes.
MS-13 or Mara Salvatrucha is originally from El Salvador but migrated to southern California. It is one of the largest and most well-known gangs in the United States today. They added the 13 to pay tribute to the California prison gang, the Mexican Mafia. They quickly became the most violent gang because their original members had experience in guerrilla training. They can also be found in Honduras and Guatemala. In 2002, gang members boarded a public bus and executed 28 people, including children. Because of their homeland, they often have access to high-tech weapons and firearms, and often engage in firearms trafficking. Many of these limbs cover themselves with tattoos. Members also wear blue Dodgers baseball caps with beige or blue Dickies and long sleeve shirts with the top button closed. They were also rated the world’s most dangerous gang by National Geographic.
Gangs in today’s society are growing, although some cells are in decline in some geographic areas due to changes in the economy and other social issues. Some gangs are present all over the world and some are concentrated in the United States. All gangs are violent and involved in illegal activities. If you suspect gang activity in your area, contact 911 or your local police department.
