Business travel tips!

When you travel the world around you, it changes the world within you. This was one of my quotes a few years ago from my travel blog when I was blogging the World Tour. This remains true to this day, in my opinion.

I have traveled a lot in the last 3 months in particular and I am often asked how I am doing. How to maintain my energy, my focus, my relationships, my health. So here are my top travel tips – try them, you’ll love them.

TIP # 1 – MAINTAIN REGULAR SLEEPING HABITS. It’s okay for me, anyway, whether I’m traveling or not. But when I’m on the road, it’s essential for me to sleep. I adapt to the time zone I am in and go with it. I make sure that the room is dark, cool, calm and normally, during conferences, for example, I am always alone in the room. I know that many people find great joy in sharing a room when attending events. It doesn’t work for me because I get enough stimulation during working days and meetings – I don’t need the extra stimulation from someone in my room wanting to debrief for the next few hours. It’s my free time to mentally prepare for restful sleep. It also means limited electronics or television.

TIP # 2 – DO A REGULAR EXERCISE. These days, that can mean just counting your steps at airports – they are so HUGE! It takes a lot of time and steps to get around. I hired a personal trainer this year and when I’m at home it makes a huge difference. When I’m on the road I stay responsible, take my exercise and post pictures for my trainer to show proof of my commitment. At a minimum, I do yoga moves that help stretch after long airplane rides. I also bring my exercise DVD with me – me and Jillian Roberts – watch the world!

TIP # 3 – I MAKE GOOD FOOD CHOICES. There really is no point in looking at a menu when I travel. I know what I eat for breakfast, lunch, and dinner on a regular basis – now remember my 80/20 rule. When I’m in a special place (like in Africa – I’ll have the chocolate croissants … I’m just saying!) – I’ll try different foods. But for normal travel – I stick to my usual food choices – and rarely have a drink when I’m on the road. It spoils my sleep. I know that. So why do it?

TIP # 4: I KEEP MY GRATITUDE JOURNAL. Next to my sports clothes, my gratitude journal is the only thing that goes in the suitcase. It is when I travel that I realize and recognize the blessed life I am living and I want to keep my attitude of gratitude.

TIP 5: MAINTAIN A SENSE OF HUMOR. Traveling these days can be frustrating, stimulating, and difficult. There are a lot of things out of my control. Keeping a sense of humor is so important – and I do it by watching people. I love this! Most people have their faces glued to their electronics – I just sit down with my latte and watch. It’s great for keeping stress levels down. (Good quality chocolate and a Starbucks latte make me a happy traveler! – find your happy place too!)

I have traveled a lot and will continue to do so. My travel tips aren’t rocket science – they’re pretty basic and yet they work. Try them out – you’ll like them too.
